We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Virtual Controller to join our growing Client Advisory Services (CAS) practice. This role supports a diverse portfolio of small to mid-sized businesses by delivering high-value financial leadership, full-cycle accounting oversight, and forward-looking advisory services.

Ideal candidates include experienced Controllers, Finance Managers, or Senior Accountants ready for the next step who thrive in a client-facing environment and enjoy solving problems, building financial structure, and improving processes.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Advisory

  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients, providing financial insights, recommendations, and guidance to support business decisions.

  • Prepare and present monthly/quarterly financial reporting packages, KPI dashboards, and analysis.

  • Support and participate in forecasting, budgeting, and scenario planning activities.

  • Identify financial risks, cash flow concerns, and opportunities for operational improvements.

Controller-Level Duties

  • Oversee full-cycle accounting for multiple clients, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.

  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes, review and approve:

  • Bookkeepers’ month-end working papers

  • Balance sheet reconciliations (& ensure proper supporting schedules)

  • Revenue/expense coding, accruals, payroll entries, and adjustments

  • Develop, document, and enhance internal controls, financial policies, and accounting workflows.

  • Coordinate with clients’ auditors, tax advisors, and internal stakeholders.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare and deliver monthly/quarterly financial reporting packages.

  • Analyze variances, trends, and KPIs for client leadership teams.

  • Provide practical recommendations and insights (cash flow, margin analysis, cost controls, etc.).

Operational Accounting & Hands-On Execution

  • Perform or supervise day-to-day accounting tasks: AP, AR, payroll review, bank reconciliations, journal entries, etc.

  • Clean up general ledgers, correct accounting issues, and streamline accounting systems.

  • Assist with onboarding new clients, chart of accounts setup, and accounting system migrations.

Technology & Process Improvement

  • Recommend and implement cloud-based accounting tools (e.g., QuickBooks Online, Sage, Xero, Dext, Wagepoint, Plooto, etc.).

  • Improve and automate client processes to drive efficiency and scalability.

  • Support data integrity and reporting accuracy across all platforms.

Qualifications

Must-Haves

  • 4–10 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance (Senior Accountant, Assistant Controller, Controller, or similar).

  • Strong understanding of ASPE, month-end processes, and financial reporting.

  • Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to present financial data clearly.

  • Hands-on, willing to execute day-to-day accounting functions when needed.

  • Ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines simultaneously.

  • Excellent communication skills and client-facing confidence.

Nice-to-Haves

  • CPA designation (or working toward completion).

  • Experience in public practice, outsourced finance, or advisory services.

  • Familiarity with small/mid-size business environments, including owner-managed companies and nonprofits.

  • Experience with workflow automation tools and cloud platforms.
